Recommended Workbooks for EMS Students
If you’re building your EMS foundation, the right workbook can make studying much easier. These are some of my recommended anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology workbooks for EMR, EMT, and PCP students. I only recommend resources that can actually help you understand the material better, not just memorize it.

1) Netter’s Anatomy Coloring Book
Best for: Visual learners
This is a great pick if anatomy feels overwhelming. Coloring-based learning can make structures, pathways, and body systems easier to remember, and the newest edition was released in February 2026.
Why I recommend it:

- Great for memory retention
- Easier than passively rereading notes
2) Anatomy & Physiology Workbook For Dummies
Best for: Simple explanations and practice
This workbook is a good option if you want A&P broken down in a less intimidating way. The current edition is the 3rd edition and includes online practice support.

3) Medical Terminology for Dummies
Best for: Best for beginners learning medical language
This workbook breaks down complex terms into simple parts so you can understand them instead of just memorizing. It’s a great starting point if terminology is slowing you down in assessments or scenarios.

4) Anatomy & Physiology Made Easy

My advice
If you are struggling most with visual anatomy, start with Netter’s Anatomy Coloring Book. If you need simpler explanations and practice, go with A&P Workbook For Dummies. If you need help with medical language, choose Medical Terminology Systems. For something more EMS-specific, the emergency care workbook is probably the best fit.
